The Perfume Controversy: Poison through Synthetic Ingredients
While many soap makers, perfume makers and perfume patrons promote natural ingredients, the industry in general takes a contradictory stand. Recent studies have shown that there is some health and environmental issues involved when using perfumes with synthetic products.
Phthalates (tha-lates), a chemical used in perfumes (ironically) have been known to cause lung, liver and kidney damage. Phthalates is mainly used to add flexibility and help dissolve other ingredients. In most cases, this ingredient isn't even placed in the labels.
In 1986, The National Academy of Sciences also found out that six synthetic fragrances including benzene derivatives and aldehydes are capable of causing cancer, birth defects and central nervous system disorders.
Musk Ambrette is also a well-known synthetic ingredient for perfumes used to slow evaporation or as an artificial flavor in compositions such as cherry, nut, vanilla and mint. This is used as a fixative for fragrance formulas. Studies have found out that it may cause brain damage and weakness in the limbs.
For asthmatics, it is not advisable to use perfumes. Fragranced product information from the website, www.fpinva.org, has said "The Institute of Medicine placed fragrance in the same category as second hand smoke in triggering asthma in adults and school age children." Since perfume reacts differently to different body chemistries, the effect to the person is unpredictable. There are those who get mild allergies or have migraine headaches.

Environmentalists have complained that perfumes that use synthetic ingredients add to air and water pollution. Some fragrances end up in waste water and in marine mammals which ingest them. Studied Mussels and fish found in Japan and Europe contained persistent amount of synthetic fragrances. These ingredients do not usually break down and stay in their system for long periods of time. What's scary is if these animals are consumed by humans. Eating them is similar to eating shampoo or perfume.
Musk xylene, the most common industrial fragrance produced in Japan from 1987 to 1996 has been banned because traces of it have been found in breast milk, as well as in the circulatory system and body fat of man.
While many people justify that fragrances are not directly ingested or thrown, nature has a strange way of returning to man what it gives to nature. Awareness is key, as well as responsible purchase. Before buying any personal care product, one should be aware of the risks involved.
Man should weigh the consequences: Health or Vanity?
